Game 35 - North Texas at Northern Iowa

November 30 at McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, IA
espn3.com

Northern Iowa trailed by two points at halftime and 49-46 early in the second half, but used an 11-0 run to take the lead for good in a 93-70 victory.

The Panthers' defense was the real story over the final 17 minutes as North Texas made just 8-of-25 over that stretch (with six turnovers) after starting the game hitting 20-of-29 from the field.

Notes

* Taking the first name "Michael" and adding letters and an apostrophe to it or coming up with a new way of spelling it & adding a J doesn't mean those were the right things to do.

That's the situation we have with North Texas players Ja'Michael Brown and J-Mychal Reese.

* Let's get to some Basketball Phrases from the broadcast team.

"A culture of excellent defense"
"Double-double machine"
"That's a horse shot"
"More interchangable parts"
"The man in the middle"
"Passing that leather around"

And also, this was said about Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson, who coming into the night was an excellent 201-106 in 10 seasons at UNI:

"This consistency of winning by Ben Jacobson is unparalleled."

He's been very good. But: unparalleled?!

Games 33 & 34 - Pair of blowouts

Discovery HS at Heritage HS
November 28 at Curtis Bell Gymnasium in Conyers, GA

It's expected to be a nice winter for both of the basketball teams at Heritage, and Discovery found out why Saturday afternoon.

The girls started the day with a 68-27 blowout as their top two players - sophomore center Camille Saunders (23 points & 15 rebounds) and junior guard Asia Caldwell (17 points) led the way.

The boys reached the Sweet 16 a season ago and this year are a potential state final four team. Juniors Isaiah Banks (14 points) and Byron Abrams (10 points) are Division 1 prospects and Jordan Thomas (16 points) will also play somewhere at the next level. Not to mention seniors Makyle Wilkerson, a Division III prospect, and Charles Moore, who if he can add a jumper may end up being the best collegiate of the group.

The Patriots also play team defense extremely well and Saturday's 80-47 romp helped them move to 5-0.

Game 32 - IUPUI at Georgia State

November 27 at GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, GA
espn3.com

Georgia State led by 11 with about seven minutes to go, but the Panthers had turnover problems all night and let IUPUI get back into the game, and eventually take the lead.

It was an excellent end of regulation for guard Isaiah Williams, who with the Panthers down by four with 30 seconds left, assisted on a Jeff Thomas jumper, then hit a lay-up and the tying free throws with 1.2 seconds to go.

In overtime, IUPUI missed all three of its three-point attempts after a 10-for-19 performance in regulation.

Jeremy Hollowell, whose been great so far in the Replacing R.J. Hunter As Best We Can (RRHBWC) role, converted a conventional three-point play one minute into overtime to put GSU up for good at 70-69.

Hollowell finished with 18 points, a team-high along with Kevin Ware (though the pair combined for 13 of GSU's 22 turnovers).

Not the prettiest of victories, but I think 3-1 with a fairly tight loss at Mississippi through four games is a start the two-time defending Sun Belt champions will take.

Game 31 - Vanderbilt vs. Kansas

November 25 at Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina, HI
ESPN

The Jayhawks erased a four-point halftime deficit to pick up the Maui Invitational title with a 70-63 win.

Kansas bounced back from a loss to Michigan State with three wins in Maui by an average margin of more than 25 points, and they won the championship Wednesday thanks in large part to excellent work from behind the arc.

Wayne Selden, who led all scorers with 25 points, hit 4-of-6 from three, part of a 50% team effort (8-of-16) from long range, while the Jayhawks held Vanderbilt to just 22% (6-of-27) there-point shooting.

Vanderbilt settled for the runner-up trophy, but played well during the tournament. The Commodores blew by St. John's, 92-55, and Wake Forest, 86-64, and I expect the Nashville school, coming off a run to the NIT quarterfinals a year ago, to again put themselves in position for an NCAA berth.

Game 30 - Belmont at Kennesaw State

November 24 at KSU Convocation Center in Kennesaw, GA
espn3.com

Belmont rolled to an 80-55 victory in the Legends Classic championship game, though the real legends were the members of the broadcast team.

The espn3 telecast just began with the opening tip and I never got a chance to get any names, but these two just had a phenomenal evening.

We had Basketball Phrases & General Nonsense:

"Eyes got as big as saucers"
"Team of assassins"
"Calm, cool and collected"
"Storied program"
"Hotbed for talent"
"Verticality"
"Bunnies"
"Hack-a-Bruin"

Some people-specific silliness (psS):

"Byrd Ball"

[Great how they misspelled 'Byrd']

"The Al Skinner Era"
"It's the Nick Masterson Show!"

And some other silliness (oS):

"They've answered nicely in trying to reply"
(pardon?)

"That's the one guy that's got a giant, neon green sign above his head - 'watch me'"
(A. Why neon green?
B. We're dealing with a GIANT neon green sign here, would the 'watch me' part really be necessary?)

"He buried Egekeze into the Convocation wood!"
(yikes)

And finally, someone said "shot clock down to 10 seconds", but it sounded like 'shot clock TOWN'. That would be a pretty hectic place, I think, though I assume the stop light situation would be about the same.

Game 28 - Butler vs. Miami (Fla.)

November 22 at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, PR
ESPN

Miami looked quite good in winning three games - 105-79 over Mississippi State, 90-66 over Utah and 85-75 over Butler - and the Puerto Rico Tip Off title.

But all that really matters is a Sunday Basketball Phrases Top 7.

7. "One and done"
6. "Rim protector"
5. "Yeoman-like work"
4. "Live ball turnover"
3. "Uber-competitive"
2. "You feed your bigs"
1. "Glue guy"

Game 25 - Temple vs. Butler

I just have one, simple question: what is a floor game?!

I've heard a number of basketball announcers say things like "he's got an excellent floor game", or "I've been impressed with her floor game."

Are there basketball games I'm not aware of that are being played on something besides a floor?

Why do people have to invent so many different ways of saying this player is good?

Game 23 - Miami (Fla.) vs. Mississippi State

Miami rolled to a 105-79 victory, but Mississippi State is the real winner since they now have a player on our all-name team - freshman guard Jett Jobe.

Game 22 - Mississippi vs. George Mason

November 19 at TD Arena in Charleston, SC
ESPN

What a day for color commentator Craig Robinson, who was all over the place, yet right there in TD Arena.

Let's take a look at Craig's top 6:

6. "That's the sign of a young team - losing a halftime lead."

I disagree. I think the sign of a young team is youth.

5. "Shevon Thompson is keeping every NBA scout in the country keeping their eye on this kid."

4. "That was a restaurant-quality pass."

Pardon?

3. "That's really good basketball playing there."

Thanks, Craig!

2. "It can't go said enough."

1. "It'd be better for them to get a five-second call than a turnover."

Again, thanks Craig!

Game 21 - Tennessee Tech at New Mexico State

November 18 at Pan American Center in Las Cruces, NM
Aggie Vision

Color commentator Patrick Knapp used to be a coach, so play-by-play man Adam Young is going to refer to him as "coach".

All game long.

Game 19 - Richmond at Wake Forest

November 18 at Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, NC
espn3.com

You might think this was a great win (91-82) for Richmond to go and beat an ACC team on the road, but the Spiders are just better than the Demon Deacons. This was just a regular win.

Richmond led only 84-82 with about three minutes to play after Wake freshman Bryant Crawford (game-high 21 points) hit a 3-pointer. It was a miserable final three minutes for Wake, though as the hosts did this with their final five possessions:

1. turnover with 2:27 left
2. bad shot out of time out - 1:50
3. hurried 3-pointer, blocked  - :53
4. jumper, blocked - :28
5. lay up, blocked - :17

Amazingly, those were the only three shots Richmond blocked all night.

Meanwhile, the Richmond offense had a nice night - 46% from three, including 6-of-9 in the second half and 51% overall from the field, including a 17-of-30 performance over the final 20 minutes.

Game 16 - Valparaiso at Rhode Island

November 17 at Ryan Center in Kingston, RI

I feel like this game really put me over the top when it comes to spelling "Valparaiso" correctly on the first try.

I scribbled it down a couple times at the very start of the game - a 58-55 win for the visitors - then had to type it twice for this post and I got it the first time each time.

It's been a long journey, from the early days of Valpraiso & Valapariso, but we've finally arrived.

VALPARAISO!

Game 13 - Connecticut women at Ohio State

November 16 at Value City Arena in Columbus, OH
ESPN2

Connecticut is trying to become the first team in either men's or women's basketball to win four consecutive national titles and the Huskies got off to a fine start Monday evening.

Reigning national player of the year Breanna Stewart scored 24 points, fellow senior Moriah Jefferson had 21 (those two might be the best pair of teammates in the country) & the Huskies rolled to a 100-56 victory.

Uconn's defense was excellent as well, holding OSU to 33 percent shooting and sophomore Kelsey Mitchell, who as a freshman led the nation in scoring, to a career-low eight points on 2-of-14 shooting. The Buckeyes, who suffered the worst home loss in the program's history, have so far played and lost to the No. 2 team in the country in South Carolina (88-80 on November 13) and the top-ranked Huskies.

Basketball Phrases

Plenty of good nonsense from color commentator Stephanie White:

"She's an X-factor"
"Skill set" (6)
"Silky smooth"
"Great flash and pass"
"Sense of urgency" (2)
"Stat stuffers" (2)
"Big-game environment"
"Tunnel vision"
"Use these games as a measuring stick"
"Energy level" (3)
"Competitiveness is in her blood"
"Can leap out of the gym"

Game 12 - North Dakota State at Illinois

November 15 at Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, IL
ESPN

It sure looked like Illinois was headed for its first 0-2 start since 1923-1924 when North Dakota State went up by as much as 14 points in the first half.

But graduate transfer Mike Thorne Jr. scored 21 points with seemingly all of them coming on a nice set of moves from about four feet away and freshman reserve Jalen Coleman-Lands scored 15 points (12 in 2nd half) in Illinois' 80-74 victory.

Illinois went on a 16-3 run and took the lead for good at 60-57 on Thorne's three-point play with about 5 1/2 minutes to play in the game.

Meanwhile, the visiting Bison went from shooting 51 percent in the opening half to 31 percent-shooters in the second.

Game 11 - Middle Georgia State at Georgia State

November 13 at GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, GA

Color commentator Jihad Ali loves to use the word definitely, so it's a good thing I counted how many times he said it during this 73-54 Georgia State win.

1st half - said 18 times

Notable definitelys

"You definitely have some nerves"
"Definitely, unselfish players, unselfish team"
"Definitely, that was a grown man drive"
"90% of the game is confidence, definitely"
"Definitely got a couple blocked shots on the defensive end"
"You definitely don't want to peak in November"

@ halftime, just before start of 2nd half - 2

2nd half - 16

"Definitely don't want to start the half with a turnover"
"Definitely - Jeremy is a gifted offensive player"
"Definitely...they definitely got the talent to do it"

Game 8 - Vermont at Eastern Michigan

November 13 at Convocation Center in Ypsilanti, MI

College basketball season tipping off at 11 am? Fantastic.

The long season got started Friday morning with Eastern Michigan using a 15-4 run early in the second half to pull away and win 70-50.

Willie Mangum (18 points) and Tim Bond (15) led five with at least nine points and the Eagles are going to need that kind of offensive production after it was announced 2014-2015 leading scorer Raven Lee was suspended for violating team rules.

I had thought the suspension came as the result of his parents naming him Raven, but no: team rules.

Anyway, nice start for the Eagles, who held Vermont to 30% shooting.

I think Bond, just a sophomore, could develop into a really good player. He's quick and athletic and if that jump shot keeps improving, EMU may not miss Lee as much.

STATS WE DON'T NEED

John Becker in season openers as Vermont's head coach: 1-3

Basketball Phrases

Good start to the college nonsense season for commentators Greg Steiner & Ryan Woody.

"Electricity in the building"
"Blistering the net"
"Puts up the flight show"
"Calm demeanor" (said twice)
"Scoop and score"
"Athletic big"
"Rain threes"
"Saddled with foul trouble"

Game 6 - Los Angeles Clippers at Dallas Mavericks

November 11 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX
ESPN

Some random thoughts from a 118-108 Dallas victory:

1st quarter

Please stop shooting, Zaza Pachuila

Can anyone play center for the Mavericks besides Zaza Pachulia?

Mike Breen: "The Timberwolves have become a fun team to watch"

Jeff Van Gundy: "Yeah, they've won all of their road games and lost all (of) their home games."

Fun!

2nd

Devin Harris AND Charlie Villanueva?!

Still?!

I'd like to see Rick Carlisle with long, curly hair. And then a few shots of him pushing it out of his face while arguing with a referee.

3rd

Wesley Matthews is having a nice shooting night, but I think he's making a huge mistake not going by "Wes".

(DeAndre Jordan gets 4th foul) Breen: "The crowd is lovin' it!"

I'd say some of the crowd is likin' it.

Does Chris Paul even like playing basketball?

4th

OK, Josh Smith. You made a couple 3-pointers, but that's enough. This isn't NBA Jam and you aren't Larry Johnson on NBA Jam.
