Game 713 - Davidson at Rhode Island

February 22 at Ryan Center in Kingston, RI
ESPN2

Triple-double!

Jon Axel Gudmundsson finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and Davidson shot 61% from the field as a team in a 75-66 victory.

Gudmundsson is the second Wildcat to pick up a triple-double, joining John Falconi (December 28, 1973 vs. Loyola). It's also the third triple-double in 200 Game Season's nearly-four-year history (D'Marcus Simonds of Georgia State & Michigan's Zavier Simpson).

586 - (11) Central Michigan women vs. (6) LSU

The Chippewas certainly are enjoying the program's 50th season of womens basketball.

Tinara Moore was outstanding, scoring 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting, freshman Micaela Kelly added 17 points as Central Michigan won its first-ever NCAA game, 78-69.

Moore's lay-up at the 5:37 mark of the opening quarter gave her team the lead for the remainder of the day. LSU got as close as two points on a few occasions, but the Chippewas hit half of their shots (28-of-56) and showed why they're one of the top free throw shooting teams in the country, knocking down 15-of-17 to seal the historic win.

The MAC champions rely heavily on their starters and each of the five contributed Saturday. Reyna Frost added 12 points and 12 rebounds (CMU won the rebounding battle 41-29) before fouling out late in the fourth, Presley Hudson had 12 points and handed out eight assists and Cassie Breen hit a pair of 3-pointers to finish with eight points.

Games 579-580: First Thursday, day games

NCAA Tournament first round

580 - (10) Oklahoma vs. (7) Rhode Island
March 15 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA
CBS

E.C. Matthews hit a pair of 3-pointers in overtime, the first giving Rhode Island the lead for hood and the second a huge shot with 28 seconds to go and seven on the shot clock that put the Rams up 79-74.

Thanks to a team-high 16 from Matthews and three others in double figures, Rhode Island survived, 83-78, moving on to play second-seeded Duke in Thursday's round of 32. It's the second consecutive trip to the second round for the Rams, who before last season hadn't been to the tournament since 1998-99.

For Oklahoma's Trae Young (28 points, seven assists and six turnovers), his freshman season, and potentially a brief collegiate career, came to an end.

Donte Ingram!

After Morgan William's incredible shot in last season's womens national semifinals, I've decided that any time a player hits a game-winning shot in the tournament my lead will just be their name followed by an exclamation point.

Nothing better than a senior extending his team's season and that's what Ingram did when he drained a 3-pointer with .3 seconds left to send Loyola to round two.

The winning shot was made possible by a Lonnie Walker turnover. The Miami freshman dribbled the ball off his leg with 23 seconds left (great defense by another freshman, Lucas Williamson, who helped by first deflecting the ball), and though Loyola missed a pair of shots at the other end, Walker missed the front end of a one-and-one, which preceded Ingram's dramatic bucket.

It's the first NCAA win for the Ramblers since a 70-57 triumph over SMU in the 1985 round of 32.

Games 377-378: Moving on

378 - (10) Marquette vs. (7) South Carolina

377 - (11) Rhode Island vs. (6) Creighton

It's incredible that a major conference team can go 44 years without an NCAA win, but South Carolina did until Friday.

Sindarius Thornwell had 29 points and 11 rebounds and P.J. Dozier added 21 and the Gamecocks ran away from Marquette in a 93-73 win. Playing in the tournament for the first time since 2004, South Carolina won for the first time since a March, 1973 victory over Lafayette in a third-place game. That's how long it had been.

It was also the first tournament win for Rhode Island since the 1998 team made a run to the Elite 8.

The Rams, Atlantic 10 champions, had a terrible day shooting the three (4-of-21), but made up for it with great free-throw shooting (28-of-31) and having four players in double figures, led by Jeff Dowtin's 23 points.

I'm really looking forward to Rhode Island's round of 32 match up with third-seeded Oregon.

Game 46 - Rhode Island at Nebraska

December 13 at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, NE
espn3.com

Yes, Nebraska erased an 11-point deficit and won 70-67 on the court, but slightly off the court? Commentator Kevin Lehman was the star on Sunday afternoon.

He started with this:

"This is not a game you want to wear a tuxedo to. This could turn into some mud wrestling."

Pardon?

But that was just the beginning for Lehman.

Let's take a look at the rest of his top 10:

9. "With the defender in his cylinder"
8. "A bit of a rock fight"
7. "Coach, give me the pill, I'm ready to go!"
6. "Put your seat belt on, baby, strap it in!"
5. "Have defense, will travel"
4. "A little taste of the tin"
3. "Big tree of Hurleys, and they are related!"
2. "They look like they eat weights for lunch!"
1. (On freshman receiving a lot of information) "It's like taking a drink of water out of a fire hydrant"

** Also, with Rhode Island up 52-44: "This team will not go away"

Game 16 - Valparaiso at Rhode Island

November 17 at Ryan Center in Kingston, RI
ESPN

I feel like this game really put me over the top when it comes to spelling "Valparaiso" correctly on the first try.

I scribbled it down a couple times at the very start of the game - a 58-55 win for the visitors - then had to type it twice for this post and I got it the first time each time.

It's been a long journey, from the early days of Valpraiso & Valapariso, but we've finally arrived.

VALPARAISO!
