Game 723 - Richmond at George Mason

February 27 at Eaglebank Arena in Fairfax, VA
ESPN +

FAIRFAX, Va. - Jamal Hartwell and his George Mason teammates were nearly unstoppable from behind the arc in the second half Wednesday.

The Patriots were 8-of-12 from three over the final 20 minutes with Hartwell knocking down three in a 77-63 victory in Atlantic 10 play.

George Mason (16-12, 10-5) trailed by a point when Richmond's Jacob Gilyard hit a jumper with just over 16 minutes left. But George Mason's first five field goals in the second half were threes, including three straight - Hartwell hit two and Otis Livingston added one of his own - to turn that deficit into a 44-37 lead at the 13:50 mark.

Richmond (12-16, 6-9) got as close as four points the rest of the night.

Hartwell, just a freshman, scored a team-high 15 points, all on threes.

The Spiders led by as much as 10 points in the opening half, building a 16-6 lead on Julius Johnson's 3-pointer at the 14:49 mark. Hartwell drained a three with five seconds to play that put the Patriots up 32-29 at the break.

Johnson scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting for Richmond.

You might think this was a great win (91-82) for Richmond to go and beat an ACC team on the road, but the Spiders are just better than the Demon Deacons. This was just a regular win.

Richmond led only 84-82 with about three minutes to play after Wake freshman Bryant Crawford (game-high 21 points) hit a 3-pointer. It was a miserable final three minutes for Wake, though as the hosts did this with their final five possessions:

1. turnover with 2:27 left
2. bad shot out of time out - 1:50
3. hurried 3-pointer, blocked  - :53
4. jumper, blocked - :28
5. lay up, blocked - :17

Amazingly, those were the only three shots Richmond blocked all night.

Meanwhile, the Richmond offense had a nice night - 46% from three, including 6-of-9 in the second half and 51% overall from the field, including a 17-of-30 performance over the final 20 minutes.
