Game 273 - Georgia State at South Alabama

January 30 at Mitchell Center in Mobile, AL
American Sports Network

There's nothing quite as horrifying & eventually gratifying about going on the road, losing a 16-point lead, committing 18 turnovers and 21 fouls, shooting 62 percent from the free-throw line and still escaping with a victory.

GSU did all those things on Monday, capturing its sixth straight, 83-80, and they did it mainly because it has D'Marcus Simonds and Jeremy Hollowell.

Each time I write about the Panthers on this site I find new ways to talk about how impressive is the freshman Simonds. He had just four points at halftime (though he did hand out four assists), but came alive in the second, taking over the offense and finishing with 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting. You don't hear Simonds' name at all when discussing the top freshmen in the country, but I think you're going to start to.

Hollowell hit a handful of baskets through the first 12 or so minutes of the game, but seemed to get exceedingly frustrated as the game went on.

But the senior was great down the stretch as he hit a bucket, then assisted on a Malik Benlevi 3-pointer at the three-minute mark to give the visitors a five-point cushion. South Alabama refused to go away, so Hollowell's contested, banked-in three with 45 seconds to go put GSU back up 76-73.

The Panthers were awful from the line through the first 39:44, but a perfect 6-for-6 - Hollowell had two to finish with 20 points - over the final 16 seconds to slither out of Mobile with another win.

GSU, now 7-2 in the Sun Belt, moved into a three-way tie with Georgia Southern and Arkansas State for first place.

The teams played two extremely close games this season, both GSU victories. Back on January 7 in Atlanta, Devin Mitchell capped an 8-0, game-ending run with a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 78-77 win.

Game 272 - Rider at Canisius

January 30 at Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, NY
espn3.com

Canisius came into the night first in the MAAC and 30th nationally in scoring at 81.3 points, but fell well below that in a 72-66 setback.

Huge road win for Rider, which helped keep a few other trends going Monday night.

The Broncs came in leading the conference in three-point field goal defense, and Canisius made only 6-of-25 from behind the arc. Meanwhile, the Canisius defense is in the bottom 25 nationally in field goal percentage defense and Rider hit half of its shots (23-of-46).

* Play-by-play man Doug Sherman called Donyell Marshall an "NBA star", so we can't let him get away with that.

Game 271 - Illinois State at Evansville

January 29 at Ford Center in Evansville, IN
espn3.com

Illinois State hasn't reached the NCAA Tournament since the 1997-1998 team, under current Pittsburgh head coach Kevin Stallings, won the Missouri Valley and reached the Round of 32.

That long tournament drought could be coming to an end this year as the Redbirds remained perfect in league play (10-0) with Sunday's 69-59 victory.

It's the best start in Valley play in program history.

The starting front court of sophomore Phil Fayne and senior Deontae Hawkins was excellent, combining for 27 points and 18 rebounds and 68 percent (11-of-16) shooting from the field.

* Daouda Ndiaye did a little bit of everything, good and bad, for the visitors. The 7-0 sophomore center blocked a career-high six shots, but also had three turnovers and committed four fouls in just 14 minutes.

* Jaylon Brown (17 points, 7-of-16 FG) and David Howard (16, 6-of-7) showed up for Evansville, but the rest of the team did not (9-of-34). After winning 24 and 25 games, respectively the last two seasons and starting this season 9-4, things have turned in the wrong direction for the Purple Aces. Sunday's loss was the ninth in 10 games with the only win during that stretch coming on New Years day against Northern Iowa.

Game 270 - Georgia State at Troy

January 28 at Trojan Arena in Troy, AL
espn3.com

D'Marcus Simonds did it again.

The freshman guard continued a torrid stretch on Saturday, scoring a game-high 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting in GSU's 78-72 win.

Simonds, who is avergaing 22.2 points and shooting 61 percent from the field over the last four games, took control of the offense from the very beginning, driving strong to the basket for a number of lay-ups and adding a smooth, short jumper or two. He was the best player on the floor, and that's with Troy's Wesley Person knocking down seven 3-pointers for a team-high 25 points.

The Panthers had 11 steals and despite nearly losing the entirety of a 14-point halftime lead, won for the fifth consecutive time.

Jared Brownridge!

Brownridge was fantastic for much of the game, scoring 25 points and leading the Broncos to a 76-68 win, snapping a 16-game losing streak in the series.

Santa Clara knocked off BYU for the first time SINCE DECEMBER 2, 1972. Average margin of victory for the Cougars during their streak, which included a 30-point win less than a month ago, was 18 1/2 points.

Santa Clara not only avenged that defeat, but the 6-3 Broncos pulled even with BYU for third place in the West Coast Conference.

Game 265 - Saint John's at Providence

January 25 at Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI
FS1

Marcus LoVett was fantastic, finishing with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting and Saint John's overcame outstanding Providence shooting (31-of-50, 62%) to pull the road upset.

Shamorie Ponds had a nice night as well, scoring 22 points and hitting 4-of-5 from three-point range.

The Friars have dropped two of their last three games at Dunkin Donuts Center after winning their previous 13 home games.

Game 264 - San Diego State at Air Force

An excellent night of saying the word "basketball" for the broadcast team of Ari Wolfe & Blaine Fowler. The final numbers:

"Basketball"

First half: said 14 times
Second half: said 23 times

Total: 37

* Fowler also said something about how it's sometimes difficult for warm-weather teams (San Diego State) to come and play in colder places (like Colorado Springs). Here's the problem, Blaine: IT'S BASKETBALL! THEY PLAY INDOORS!

Game 263 - NAIA Tuesday

Goshen (Indiana) Mapleleafs at Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats

WIWU/espn3.com

Indiana Wesleyan, the defending NAIA Div II national champions, saw a 23-point lead get sliced to seven with about 5 1/2 minutes to go, but still won its fifth straight game, 87-78.

Big night for seniors Bob Peters (new captain of the Bob Peters All Stars - the Washington Generals to the Scoochie Smith All Stars' Harlem Globetrotters), who scored 25 points on 6-of-10 from three-point range, & Lane Mahurin, who became the fifth Wildcat to reach the 2,000-point mark.

Mahurin joins Perry Frank, the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,452 points, on that list. Frank was the color commentator Tuesday and he and broadcast partner Roger Alcock had a nice night of nonsense:

"fundamentals 101"
"slamma jamma!"/"take a look at this one from the slam jam cam!"
"muscled it up through traffic"
"there's an old saying - 'teamwork makes the dream work'"
"he got all orange there"
"he has one speed and that's full blast"
"barnburner"
"wheeling and dealing in the paint"
"Grant Evans pouring a little water on this Goshen fire"

Game 261 - Youngstown State at Milwaukee

January 22 at UWM Panther Arena in Milwaukee, WI
espn3.com

Youngstown State had a nine-point lead with 6 1/2 minutes to go in regulation, and still led 75-71 at the 2:50 mark, but didn't score the rest of regulation. Instead, host Milwaukee got a tip-in from Brett Prahl with 2.5 seconds left, then scored the first eight points in overtime and won 94-85.

Bad loss for Youngstown, which fell behind Milwaukee (3-6 in conference vs. 3-5) into 8th place in the Horizon League.

I was anxious to see Youngstown's Cameron Morse, the nation's ninth-leading scorer (though just second in the Horizon League - Valparaiso's Alec Peters is averaging 23.9 points), for the first time. Morse didn't dissapoint in the first half and a decent portion of the second. Morse scored 21 points, just a point and a half below his season average, though none came after the 7:53 mark of the second half.

A lot of that had to do with the constant blanketing of Morse by one or more defenders. The junior forward pulled up with confidence from three several times during the first 32 minutes and was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in regulation, but he looked uncomfortable at times passing out of those traps. He missed his only shot attempt in overtime.

* Great win for Milwaukee, which got career scoring games from Cody Wichmann (23 points, 8-of-14 shooting) and Prahl (18 points ON 9-OF-10 SHOOTING), and a 58% shooting night from the field as a team.

* Milwaukee's Brock Stull and August Haas combined for 15 assists and just two turnovers. Stull was also was one of four in double figures with 19 points.

Game 260 - Baylor at TCU

January 21 at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, TX
ESPNU

What a defensive performance from Baylor, which held TCU to 29% shooting (17-of-58) in a 62-53 victory.

Baylor moves to 6-1 in Big 12 play and just has that one hiccup, losing 89-68 to West Virginia 11 days ago, in starting 18-1.

Game 259 - Coastal Carolina at Georgia State

January 21 at GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, GA
espn3.com

Things are starting to come together for the Panthers, who won their third straight, 76-56 Saturday afternoon and at 4-2 moved into a second-place tie in the Sun Belt.

During the Ron Hunter era, which began in 2011, when GSU is going well it's usually because of a strong defense built on traps and pressure on the perimeter & good three-point shooting. Saturday was a perfect example of that as Coastal Carolina was held to 30 percent shooting, including just 19% (7-of-36) in a dominant opening half, and the Panthers knocked down a season-high 15 threes.

Jeff Thomas had three of those as he came off the bench and put together a 13-9-6 line, and D'Marcus Simonds drained four. We're just 18 games into his freshman season, but I don't think it's a stretch to say Simonds is one of the best freshmen recruits in GSU history. I'm excited for the next 3 1/2 years of the career of the Gainesville, GA product.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Hollowell, the only player on the roster in the top-30 in Sun Belt scoring, contributed another nice game - 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Hollowell's senior season gets better by the game.

I really think the Panthers are a bit of a forgotten team in the conference despite the fact they won consecutive league titles in 2014 and 2015 and reached the round of 32 of the NCAAs just two years ago. A down 2016 has allowed the Atlanta school to be a bit of a sleeper in the league. But with Simonds and fellow lead guard Isaiah Williams back from injury, Hollowell starting to consistently play like an all-league member and nightly contributions from guys like Thomas and Malik Benlevi (eight points, four assists and no turnovers Saturday), GSU is absolutely one of the Sun Belt teams to beat.

Game 258 - Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets

January 20 at Toyota Center in Houston, TX
ESPN

The Warriors made 15 threes, but even more important was their work on Houston's outside game (the Rockets made just 7-of-35 from behind the arc) in winning their sixth straight, 125-108.

Kevin Durant was great for the visitors, scoring 32 points on 12-of-19 shooting and he handed out seven of the team's 30 assists. Durant has 71 points in two games against Houston this season.

Houston's bench, led by Clint Capela - 22 points & 12 rebounds - out-scored its starters 58-50. That's never usually a good thing.

What a finish for Ivan Rabb and the Golden Bears.

Rabb hit the go-ahead free throws with five seconds left, then blocked Jordan McLaughlin attempt at the game-winner as time expired in a 74-73 victory.

McLaughlin, who along with teammate Chimezie Metu led all scorers with 20 points, had hit a bucket with 17 seconds to play that put USC in front 73-72.

Cal, trying to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, has alternated wins (Arizona State & USC) and losses (Arizona & UCLA) through its first four Pac 12 contests. Rabb led the way with 17 points.

The Trojans shot the ball extremely well from the field (51% and 58% from three), but lost for the first time in 10 home games this season.

This was my first time seeing Gonzaga and they were pretty impressive, especially Nigel Williams-Goss. The Washington transfer was fantastic - hitting threes, long-range twos, step-back jumpers, driving - and that was just the scoring portion of his night.

To go along with a career-high 36 points on just 15 shots, the redshirt-junior also handed out six assists, grabbed 11 rebounds (as what looked like a generously-listed 6-3 guard) and turned the ball over just once in 95-80 victory.

The Zagdogs moved to 15-0 and continued the best start in program history.

Four different players hit at least two 3-point shots for GW, which overcame 17 turnovers.
