Games 410-411: Opening weekend doubleheader

411 - Howard at Indiana
November 12 at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, IN
Big 10 Network

It was a nice night of basketball phrases and general nonsense from the Big 10 Network duo of Brandon Gaudin and Stephen Bardo.

"a jack of all trades" (3)
"the pressure cooker that is the Indiana Hoosiers"
"integral cog in the attack"
"rise and fire"
"he's got a lot of city in his game"
"Bob Hurley and St Anthony's"
"tear drop" (2)
"volume shooters"
"court vision"
"and now, a teaching moment"
"on NBA scouts radar"
"hoops hotbed"
"old school"
"tremendous upside" (2)
"the Butler way"

410 - Loyola Marymount at UT Arlington
November 11 at College Park Center in Arlington, TX

Game 203 - (5) Indiana vs. (1) North Carolina

NCAA Tournament regional semifinals
March 25 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA
TBS

Not sure how much more we're going to hear from Steve Smith this season, so I thought it was important to once more count how many times he says the word "basketball".

Steve(ph?)en...

First half: said 17 times

Second half: said 9 times

Total: 26

Notable "basketballs"

"Throwing the basketball ahead"
"He's putting the basketball close to your shoulder"
"Yogi could've gotten the basketball"

Other game watched:

(11) Gonzaga vs. (10) Syracuse
(4) Stanford women vs. (1) Notre Dame

Game 193 - (5) Indiana vs. (4) Kentucky

NCAA Tournament round of 32
March 19 at Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA
CBS

Tyler Ulis was great for Kentucky - 27 points on 10-of-20 shooting, but unfortunately for the Wildcats he didn't get nearly enough help in a 73-67 loss.

Indiana, which will play in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2012-13, was excellent in its two-point shooting, making 19-of-31 from inside the arc. Thomas Bryant had 19 points and Yogi Ferrell added 18.

It's been some turnaround for Tom Crean and the Hoosiers. Crean went 28-66 in his first three seasons in Bloomington, but is 120-52 in his past five seasons, which now includes three Sweet 16 appearances.

Game 172 - (8) Michigan vs. (1) Indiana

Big 10 quarterfinals
March 11 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN
ESPN

It must be at any point in the Earth's history because Indiana lost early in the Big 10 Tournament.

Kameron Chatman drained a 3-pointer in the corner with .2 seconds left and Michigan stunned the top-seed Hoosiers 72-69.

Chatman's three was the 18th and final lead change (also 11 ties) in a back-and-forth game that may have put Michigan in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, Indiana's league tournament woes continue as the loss dropped them to 11-19 all-time in the event and just 4-10 in the last 10 tournaments.

* Derrick Walton picked up his 12th assist on Chatman's shot, which set the single-game tournament record.

* Let's get a few quick Basketball Phrases:

"Help side fundamentals/random nonsense"
"Bracketology"
"Sit at the big boy table"
"Stretch five"
"Screen the screener"
"Use it or lose it timeout"
"Elephant in the room"
"Glue players"

Game 80 - Northwestern at Indiana

January 23 at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, IN
ESPN2

This was my first time seeing Indiana and when the Hoosiers are shooting the ball like they did Saturday (52% FG, 46% 3PT) and in their last game against Illinois (Big 10 record 19 3-pointers), they look like a potential Final Four team.

The 89-57 drubbing wasn't close at any point. IU went up 10-0 early and Northwestern never recovered. This was Indiana's 12th consecutive win and it stayed unbeaten (7-0) in league play.

Newest Scoochie Smith All star, Yogi Ferrell, led the way for IU with 17 points and six assists.

1. "timeout on the floor"

Can timeouts be called anywhere else besides the court?

Do we have people trying to call a timeout from one of the concession areas?

Everything happens on the floor!

2. Color commentator Sean Harrington, you're up:

"You can't make tradition, you either have it or you don't."

Pardon?

Game 44 - Indiana women at Indiana State

December 8 at Hulman Center in Terre Haute, IN
espn3.com

Let me tell you about a young man by the name of Michael Odom.

Wow!

It could've been his first broadcast, or his 214th, we can't be sure. But we can be sure that he starts many sentences with the phrase "just like that". Let's take a look at Odom's just like that count (JLTC):

1st quarter
Total just like thats: 11

Notable JLTs

"Just like that, we're underway"
"And just like that, Indiana State ties the game"
"Just like that - what a block"
"Just like that Jess Walter takes too many steps"

2nd quarter
Total: 3

"Just like that, misses a lay-up on her own"

3rd quarter
Total: 3

"Just like that, a cut to the bucket"

4th quarter
Total: 3

"And just like that it's a turnover"
"And just like that it's a seven-point game"

Total just like thats: 20

After that incredible opening quarter, I was honestly disappointed in his effort over the final three periods. But just like that, I had to move on with my life.

And here's a list of what I like to call The Odoms:

"And her stroke is smooth as butter"
"They did have a nice hot game"
"Never doesn't give enough effort"
"And her swag meter is off the roof"/"to make this roof blow off the Hulman Center"
"Buss...she gets the home roll" (Tyra Buss plays for Indiana)
(With Indiana up 52-48 1:18 left in 4th) "Indiana has their backs against the wall"
"She battled the flu bug as well as the turnover bug"
"Put her defender in the spin cycle"
"They are booing and oohing and aahing"
"I had a chance to catch up to the Indiana coach" (the second use of 'to' instead of 'with' makes this a phenomenal sentence)

And let's not forget Odom's partner Abbi Malchow, who had some fine moments of her own:

"Make sure you make the shots that you hit"
"This Big 10 rivalry" (no)
"The Sycamore house"
"These last few moments are going to be very big for both teams, and also very detrimental" (pardon?)
