Here's a note I wrote just a few minutes before tip-off of NC Central's 72-62 victory: Cory Alexander, don't let me down saying the word "basketball". Be the best Stan Lewter you can be.
Back in December, I scribbled down a similar message for Lewter before the Gardner-Webb-Wake Forest game, and Lewter came through with a fantastic performance. Alexander didn't quite reach that level, but 40 total mentions of the word "basketball" (one per game minute) is nothing to be ashamed of.
Play-by-play man Doug Sherman added 11 of his own for a broadcast total of 51 (1.27/game minute).
Well done, gentleman.

Games 664 - Bethel College (KS) at York College (NE)
January 12 at Freeman Center in York, NE
espn3
The story was Jada Brown's 27 point, 14-rebound double-double and teammate Abby Schmidt's 26 & 14 in helping the visitors overcome a nine-point halftime deficit to win 76-62.
The senior Brown was sensational in the second half, scoring 23 of her points by mainly getting to the rim and finishing a number of possessions with lay-ups. Schmidt, a sophomore, lived at the line (14-of-21) and the pair were a big reason why the Threshers out-rebounded York 48-34.
York, which fell to a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference-worst 1-13 (Bethel moved to 9-5), scored the final 14 points of the half and led 38-29 at the break. The third was all-Bethel, though, with a 15-0 run to start the quarter the key push. York got to within 62-60 on an Amaia Diez jumper with about 6 1/2 minutes to play in the game, but that was the last field goal for the hosts, who scored just two points over the final 6 1/2 minutes.
Of course, the story for us at 200 Game Season was the work of play-by-play man C.J. Layton, who set an in-game site record by saying "dribble drive" just 12 seconds into this one. The 9:48 mark of the opening quarter? OUTSTANDING WORK, SIR.
Layton now sits atop our ever-growing list.

Game 653 - Middle Georgia State at Georgia State
December 29 at GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, GA
ESPN +
It was an NAIA opponent, yes, but good heavens what a way to close the non-league portion of the schedule.
GSU scored the fourth-most points in program history and had its second-largest margin of victory ever in a 117-69 victory.
After a sluggish start and an early struggle from behind the arc, Middle Georgia actually led 20-15 nine minutes in. But Nelson Phillips' tremendous offensive rebound and eventual put back at the 7:42 mark capped an 11-0 run and GSU led 26-20 and for the remainder of the day. The freshman Phillips had his finest game as a collegiate, scoring a career-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while Devin Mitchell knocked down seven 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 21 points (18 in the second half).
The Panthers hit 16 three-pointers and four others reached double figures, including Malik Benlevi and Damon Wilson, who chipped in with 16 apiece.
Middle Georgia shot 41% from the field in the first half, but just 27% (10-of-36) in the second and turned the ball over 21 times. GSU led 48-37 at the break, then its second-half point total equaled the visiting Knights' scoring output for the game.
The three highest-scoring single games in school history also came against in-state teams from lower divisions. The Panthers defeated Fort Valley State 122-106 in November, 1989; Piedmont 119-76 in November, 1991; and Morris Brown 118-81 in December, 1988 (thanks to GSU SID Mike Holmes for those numbers). The largest margin of victory in program history was the highest recent point total before Saturday - a 115-55 victory over Tennessee Temple in November, 2014.
After a great non-conference slate that included wins over 2018 NCAA team St. Bonaventure, Alabama and Georgia, the Panthers (9-4) open Sun Belt play with a road trio to UT-Arlington, who it beat in last year's Sun Belt championship game, January 3, and Texas State, January 5.

Game 317 - Just let the madness begin
Huntington women at Indiana Wesleyan
Crossroads League (NAIA) quarterfinals
February 21 at Luckey Arena in Marion, IN
WIWU/espn3.com
We don't need to wait for Division 1 to get conference tournament season underway, and what a way for the season to begin for Huntington.
Miranda Palmer scored 26 points and the Foresters pulled the upset with a dominant performance, 79-59.
Huntington, which shot a ridiculous 73% from the field in the second half (5-of-7 from three), moves on to Friday's semifinals and will visit No. 2 seed Saint Francis, an 80-63 winner over seventh-seeded Bethel in another quarterfinal.
Palmer is the school's all-time leading scorer, (and one of only two players along with Amy Betchel, who she passed for No. 1 earlier this season, with 2,000 or more points). It was easy to see why in this one. The senior guard hit three step-back jumpers in the first period, one of which a 3-pointer with just under a minute left giving the visitors the lead for good at 12-9. Palmer hit 3-of-4 from behind the arc and added three assists while playing all 40 minutes.
The higher-seeded Wildcats, who look like they are going to miss the NAIA national tournament for the first time since 2003, never could get going & shot an ugly, 4-for-22 from three-point range.

Game 263 - NAIA Tuesday
Goshen (Indiana) Mapleleafs at Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats
January 24 at Luckey Arena in Marion, IN
WIWU/espn3.com
Indiana Wesleyan, the defending NAIA Div II national champions, saw a 23-point lead get sliced to seven with about 5 1/2 minutes to go, but still won its fifth straight game, 87-78.
Big night for seniors Bob Peters (new captain of the Bob Peters All Stars - the Washington Generals to the Scoochie Smith All Stars' Harlem Globetrotters), who scored 25 points on 6-of-10 from three-point range, & Lane Mahurin, who became the fifth Wildcat to reach the 2,000-point mark.
Mahurin joins Perry Frank, the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,452 points, on that list. Frank was the color commentator Tuesday and he and broadcast partner Roger Alcock had a nice night of nonsense:
"fundamentals 101"
"slamma jamma!"/"take a look at this one from the slam jam cam!"
"muscled it up through traffic"
"there's an old saying - 'teamwork makes the dream work'"
"he got all orange there"
"he has one speed and that's full blast"
"barnburner"
"wheeling and dealing in the paint"
"Grant Evans pouring a little water on this Goshen fire"
