Game 685 - Georgia Southern at Georgia State
February 2 at GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, GA
ESPN +
The last time GSU was on the court, D'Marcus Simonds scored just one point in a win over UT-Arlington last Saturday.
Safe to say, Simonds bounced back a week later.
The junior scored a game-high 29 points, his back court mate Kane Williams added 19 and the Panthers closed the game on a 13-3 run to win 81-72.
Georgia Southern led 69-68 with about 4 1/2 minutes to play on a nice move in the lane by Tookie Brown that led to a lay-up. The Eagles would only score three points the rest of the day as Simonds hit 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to tie it and a jumper from Malik Benlevi with 3 1/2 minutes to go gave GSU (16-6, 7-2 Sun Belt Conference) the lead for good. Williams, who added four assists and four steals, was 6-for-6 from the line down the stretch.
Jeff Thomas, whose follow-dunk of a Benlevi miss with 1:13 to go was the highlight of the afternoon & made it 77-70, did a bit of everything, adding 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Benlevi added 12 on 5-of-8 shooting.
Quan Jackson led Southern (13-9, 5-4) with 20 points, 16 of which came after halftime.
The teams meet again in Statesboro, Georgia on March 9, the final day of the regular season.

That was an extremely satisfying championship run.
GSU got 27 points from D'Marcus Simonds and never trailed in defeating UT Arlington 74-61 in the Sun Belt final.
Simonds picked up Most Outstanding Player honors for the tournament despite struggling in the semifinal win. The sophomore was 8-of-19 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line (the team finished 16-of-20) a day after scoring only six points and fouling out in a 73-67 victory. When Simonds is driving to the rim and making lay-ups and/or getting fouled like he was Sunday, GSU is a tough team to beat.
Here's a great statistic: GSU trailed for a total of 18 seconds during this tournament. Georgia Southern took a 7-6 lead with 15:43 left in the first half of Saturday's game, and at the 15:25 mark, Coye Simmons of Georgia Southern picked up a foul and a technical foul, GSU went up 9-7 thanks to a 3-of-4 stay at the line and didn't trail for the rest of the weekend.
So, thank you Coye Simmons?
The defense was outstanding Sunday, holding Arlington's top two players - Erick Neal and Kevin Hervey - to a combined shooting performance of 4-of-29 and the team to just 29% from the field (17-of-57).
GSU is in the tournament for the first time since 2015, was given a No. 15 seed and will play No. 2 seed and American Conference champion Cincinnati in the first round on Friday.

Games 489-490: Rivalry Saturday

490 - Georgia Southern at Georgia State
Georgia State led by just three points with about 10 1/2 minutes to go, but 3-pointers from Devin Mitchell and Isaiah Williams, and a D'Marcus Simonds' dunk during a quick, 8-0 spurt put the Panthers up 66-55. Southern also helped by missing 10 consecutive shots at one point and Simonds added six more of his 24 points down the stretch in a 83-66 victory.
Excellent night from behind the arc for Georgia State, which hit 13-of-27 in winning its fifth consecutive game.
Southern led 38-37 at halftime, then shot 11-of-40 in the second half.
Simonds added 10 rebounds and six assists, Williams scored a season-high 16 off the bench and Jeff Thomas hit all five of his three-point attempts to lead a great night for the offense. The Panthers scored their most points since also scoring 83 in a loss at Dayton on December 16.
489 - Georgia Southern women at Georgia State
Finally, a Sun Belt win for the Georgia State women, which won 71-56 to improve to 1-6 in league play.
Kierra Henry led the way with 18 points in Georgia State's fourth consecutive win against its rivals. Georgia Southern, which stayed winless at 0-7 against league foes, shot 35% from the field and was out-rebounded 56-24. In fact, the Eagles had a tough time out-rebounding Panthers' post player Francesca Milani, who grabbed a career-high 18.

Games 341-342: Sweep
342 - Georgia Southern at Georgia State
341 - Georgia Southern women at Georgia State
March 4 at GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, GA
Georgia State took both games from its in-state rival on Saturday afternoon, though neither victory came easy.
In the nightcap, the Panthers turned the ball over 20 times, but thanks to 21 points from D'Marcus Simonds and 16 points on a perfect, 4-for-4 afternoon from three-point range from Jeff Thomas, won 72-67 to clinch the No. 2 seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
I've been a big fan of Thomas since the sophomore arrived on campus last season, mainly for his three-point shooting and his defense that seems to improve by the game. He hit several big shots Saturday, but his most impressive basket was probably a strong drive and off-hand lay-up that put GSU up 66-62 at the three-minute mark.
Georgia Southern, which had embarrassed Georgia State in the teams' other meeting in Statesboro last New Year's Eve, got as close as 66-65 with 2 1/2 minutes to play on a steal and lay-up by Sun Belt leading scorer Ike Smith (game-high 27 points).
Jeremy Hollowell, who struggled from the field (4-of-12), but otherwise had a really nice day with 15 points, and team-highs in rebounds (12) and assists (5), hit a pair of free throws to get the lead to 69-65, then had the biggest play of the game chasing down a loose ball on a missed free throw with 13 seconds left with the Panthers in front by three. Hollowell sealed the win at the other end with two more free throws.
UT-Arlington comes into the league tournament as the top seed, and the Mavericks have had a really good season, but I still think the tournament is up for grabs. GSU has as good a chance as anyone to secure the automatic bid.
The GSU women closed their regular season with a 63-62 win & my memories of this game will mostly revolve around Makeba Ponder.
She was just 1-of-6 from the field and had only three points at halftime, but still handed out three assists in 11 minutes and I felt the second 20 minutes could be her breakout moment. Ponder responded, hitting 5-of-10 from three-point range, including a gigantic three from the top of the key with five seconds to go that put GSU up 63-60. Southern's Alexis Brown missed a potential tying three and the Panthers survived to secure the league's No. 7 seed.
Ponder finished with a game-high 20 points and in two games against the Eagles, both wins, averaged 18 points.
Angel McGowan, who also scored 20 points, hit a three with 17 1/2 seconds left that pulled Southern even at 60-60.
