Games 746-748: Wednesday/Thursday tripleheader
748 - Virginia Tech vs. Florida State
ACC quarterfinals
March 14 at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC
ESPN
747 - UC Irvine women vs. Cal State Northridge
Big West quarterfinals
March 13 at Bren Events Center in Irvine, CA
ESPN
Lauren Saiki's beautiful feed to Tahlia Garza for a lay-up with two seconds left was the difference in Irvine's 59-57 and the Anteaters' first 20-win season since 1984-85 (!).
But what's important is color commentator Dave Miller said this about Northridge's Channon Fluker (20 points, 14 rebounds):
"Fluker's like LL Cool J, she's doin' it and doin' it well"
Dave!
and this about Irvine's offensive strategy:
"make shots this end, get stops at the other"
thanks, Dave!
Honorable mention
"changing the culture at UC Irvine"
"she's blue collar"
"keeps her chin on the rim"
"she's got killer instinct in her DNA"
"great motor"
"it starts with the rim run"
746 - Miami vs. Virginia Tech

Games 702-704: Saturday tripleheader
704 - Gonzaga at San Diego
February 16 at Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, CA
ESPN
703 - Stephen F. Austin women at Northwestern State
February 16 at Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, LA
espn3
Stephen F. Austin's top three players were excellent and the Lumberjacks remained unbeaten in Southland Conference play with an 87-67 win.
Stephanie Visscher scored 21 points and missed just one of her 10 field goal attempts, Imani Johnson also scored 21 and Chanell Hayes added 18 points as the visitors turned a five-point cushion late in the third into a comfortable win.
Stephen F. Austin, which hit 62% of its field goal attempts and had 26 assists on 33 made baskets, won its 13th consecutive game (it hasn't lost since getting crushed at New Mexico, December 20) and moved to 12-0 in league play.
702 - Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh
February 16 at Peterson Events Center in Pittsburgh, PA
NBC Sports Washington
That's win No. 20 for Tech, which got 29 points from Kerry Blackshear Jr. to hang on, 70-64.
This will be the fourth consecutive season the Hokies have won at least 20 games, just the second time in school history that has occurred. Led by future NBA players Dell Curry and Perry Young, the program won at least 20 in five consecutive seasons from 1981-1986.

Game 601: Alabama women at Virginia Tech
WNIT quarterfinals
March 25 at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, VA
ACC Network
Virginia Tech picked up a 74-67 win to advance to its second WNIT final four (2002), but more importantly, play-by-play man Andrew Allegretta put together a fantastic day of saying the word "basketball":
Total: 44
First quarter: 7
Second: 12
Third: 11
Fourth: 14
(averaged 1.1 per game minute)
That's how you finish strong, Andrew.

Game 167 - (11) Florida State vs. (6) Virginia Tech
ACC second round
March 9 at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.
ESPN
Dan Shulman is one of the top play-by-play men around and Jay Bilas just knows a ton of basketball.
But I still had to count some of the silly things they said during this 96-85 Virginia Tech win. Let's take a look:
"Activity level" - said four times
"Paint touch(es)" - (7)
"Leaking out" - (2)
"Body seeking" - (1)
"Bouncy" - (1)
"Energy" - (6)

Game 82 - North Carolina at Virginia Tech
January 24 at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, VA
ESPN
Excellent job by Virginia Tech to not get blown out of the building when it looked like it was about to, using an 18-3, first-half-ending run to only be down 39-34 at the break.
The game was tied three times over the final 8 1/2 minutes, including at 68-68 on a couple Kerry Blackshear free throws. But Associated Press No. 2 UNC didn't allow a field goal over the final four minutes to remain unbeaten in ACC play (7-0) with a 75-70 win.
UNC overcame another tough shooting night for point guard Marcus Paige (2-for-10 FG & 5-for-35 in his last four) mainly because Brice Johnson was outstanding (19 points, 17 rebounds, three blocks, three steals).
Six of Virginia Tech's first seven conference games have been remarkably close:
N.C. State - won 73-68 in OT
Virginia - won 70-68
(lost 82-58 to Duke)
Wake Forest - won 93-91
Georgia Tech - won 78-77
Notre Dame - lost 83-81
UNC - lost 75-70
