Games 553-554: Quarterfinal Friday

554 - (14) Rutgers vs. (3) Purdue
Big 10 quarterfinals
March 2 at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY

The Edwards' - Vince and Carsen - each scored 26 points as the Boilermakers moved into the semis with an 82-75 win.

Vince was 10-of-14 from the field and Carsen made 10-of-11 from the line to help the No. 3 seed erase a three-point halftime deficit. Both players knocked down four 3-pointers and the Boilermakers hit 13 as a team.

Great night for Corey Sanders - 23 points, 11-of-20 from the field - in a losing effort for the Scarlet Knights, who won games over 11-seed Minnesota and sixth-seeded Indiana to reach the quarters.

553 - (9) Saint Peter's vs. (1) Rider
MAAC quarterfinals
March 2 at Times Union Center in Albany, NY

Huge upset in Albany as the Peacocks out-played the regular season champion and advanced with a 66-55 win.

It's the first time in the tournament's history a nine has defeated a one and Saint Peter's did it with defense - Rider shot just 30% from the field and missed 18 of its 21 three-point attempts - and a balanced offense that saw five players score at least nine points, led by Samuel Idowu's 12 points.

The fact Saint Peter's pulled off the huge upset was a bit of a surprise, but I'm not surprised the Broncs had trouble. The Peacocks lost both regular season games between the two teams, but by a combined seven points.

Saint Peter's (14-17) has already had a memorable tournament. In Thursday's first round game against eighth-seeded Monmouth, Nick Griffin's 3-pointer with five seconds left was the difference in a 60-58 victory.

Game 530 - Maryland women at Rutgers

February 11 at Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, NJ
Big 10 Network

Ugly game for Rutgers, which turned the ball over 22 times (Maryland had 13 (!) steals) in a 72-54 loss.

On the other side, that's seven consecutive wins for Associated Press No. 10 Maryland. The Terrapins swept Rutgers and in the two games held Tyler Scaife, a top-40 scorer nationally, to 16 total points on 8-of-29 shooting (27%).

Maryland is one of the better offensive teams in the country and Sunday five were in double figures, led by Eleanna Christinaki's 18 points.

"stay available to the basketball"
"dial it up, dig a little deeper"
"screen the screener action"

Game 468 - Rutgers at Purdue

January 3 at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, IN
Big 10 Network

This was definitely a strength against a strength situation as Rutgers came into the night as one of the better defensive teams in the country and Purdue as one of the nation's better three-point shooting teams.

It was lopsided in the Boilermakers' favor.

Purdue his 10 threes and shot 50% overall from the field in its 10th consecutive victory, 82-51.

The Scarlet Knights (now 0-3 in conference play) entered play sixth nationally in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, and actually did a pretty decent job inside the paint, especially considering Purdue boasts 7-2 Isaac Haas and 7-3 Matt Haarms (the pair combined for 18 points, 14 of which came from Haas, in 51 combined minutes). But the hosts' outside shooting was too much to overcome. Purdue, 12th nationally in three-point percentage, hit 7-of-12 from behind the arc in the opening half to go up 45-24 at the break and were never really threatened much throughout the night.

Reserve guard Ryan Cline led the way with a 4-for-6 night from distance.

Haas and Haarms, who added six rebounds each and four blocked shots (three from the redshirt-freshman Haarms) also negated a Rutgers team that was second in the country in offensive rebounds. The Scarlet Knights averaged 16 coming in, but grabbed just six Wednesday.

Rutgers got as close as 57-42 with 11 minutes to go, but allowed a 18-3 run over the next seven minutes.
