Games 575-576: NIT first round

576 - (8) SE Louisiana at (1) Saint Mary's
March 13 at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, CA
ESPN

Incredible shooting performance by Saint Mary's, which was nearly 60% (35-of-59) from the field in an 89-45 blowout.

The Gaels hit 13 threes and two players - Jock Landale (26 points) and Jordan Ford (19) scored as many points as the visitors from the Southland Conference. Calvin Hermanson hit five threes and scored all 17 of his points in a first half that saw the Gaels shoot 61% in building a 43-19 halftime cushion.

The victory was the 29th for Saint Mary's, tying a program record set in each of the past two seasons.

575 - (5) Boston College at (4) Western Kentucky
March 13 at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, KY

The Hilltoppers, a top-15 shooting team nationally, hit 55% of their shots and moved on to the second round with a 79-62 victory. Western Kentucky will travel to USC, who defeated UNC Asheville 103-98 in two overtimes on Tuesday.

I wonder if Justin Johnson has an NBA future. The senior forward for WKU has good size (6-7, 245), can shoot it from anywhere (51% overall field goal percentage, 42% on threes) and is an excellent rebounder (averages 9.6, top-30 nationally). Johnson led the way on Tuesday, scoring a game-high 19 points to go along with 12 rebounds.

Taveion Hollingsworth scored 18 points and Darius Thompson added 17 points and eight assists for the Hilltoppers, who at 25-10 have their most wins since the NCAA second-round team from 2008-09 finished 25-9.

Also a nice night of nonsense from the broadcast team of Dave Weekley & Rob Kennedy:

"a catch and shoot guy"
"he's got a Charles Barkley mentality in a point guard's body"
"concussion protocol"
"back in basketball shape"
"takes his foot off the gas"
"a football mentality"
"he pursues the basketball"
"pocket pass"

Game 451 - Central Connecticut State at Boston College

December 17 at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, MA
ACC Network

This was only a seven-point game early in the second half before the host Eagles went on a long run to pull away and win 84-65.

Jerome Robinson had five points and assisted on two other baskets during a 19-2 run over a 4 1/2-minute span that turned a 45-38 lead into a 64-40 advantage. The lead grew to as large as 70-43 on a Luka Kraljevic 3-pointer at the 10:39 mark. Ky Bowman, an excellent all-around player for the Eagles, assisted on that bucket (one of 17 Boston College assists on 32 made baskets).

Bowman finished with 14 points, one of five in double figures (Robinson had 13), while Steffon Mitchell had 13 points and 14 rebounds (8! offensive), Jordan Chatman led the way with 15 points & reserve Nik Popovic added 11 points and four assists.

Central Connecticut State played well in the opening half, shooting 54% from the field, including hitting eight of its first 12 shots. The long Boston College run at the start of the second half contributed heavily to the Blue Devils shooting just 31% (11-for-35) over the final 20 minutes.

Mustafa Jones had a nice night for the visitors, showcasing a soft touch around the rim and jumpers from a variety of distances to finish with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. His teammate, Tyler Kohl led all scorers with 17 points.
