Simonds capped a 28-point day with a lay-up with .9 seconds left as GSU survived, 74-73.

The Panthers, who moved to 4-0 in Sun Belt play and won their sixth straight overall, blew a 21-point lead and Monroe took a 73-72 lead with five seconds left. After receiving the in-bounds pass, Kane Williams made a perfect pass to Simonds in stride, and the junior took it the rest of the way, got away with what looked like a travel, and saved GSU from what would've been a horrific loss.

GSU is top-20 nationally in steals and they had 10 Saturday, helping them build that big lead. But Monroe shoots a ton of threes (8-of-31 in the game) and they started making a few of them. Meanwhile, the Panthers again allowed far too many offensive rebounds (13), while the offense disappeared for stretches. That's how a 62-41 lead with about 12 minutes left turns into a deficit after Monroe's Daishon Smith converted a lay-up with five seconds to go.

Smith (11 points) was one of five Warhawks in double figures; JD Williams led the visitors with 19 points.

Nice day for Devin Mitchell as the senior scored 16 points on 4-of-10 shooting from three-point range.

This was a game GSU had to have, mainly because its in danger of being the No. 12 seed in next month's Sun Belt Tournament. This 70-57 win, which moved them to 2-11 in conference, gave them a potential tie-breaker over 1-11 ULM and allowed them to also possibly finish ahead of Georgia Southern (also 2-11, but GSU won the first match up and they play again on February 17).

Saturday, Madison Newby was her usual steady self, contributing 15 points and seven assists. Nice day for Janessa Murphy as well, who led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting. GSU had 18 assists on 24 made field goals and held Gabriella Cortez, who was fourth in the conference in scoring at 16.4 points coming in, to just nine on 3-of-14 shooting.

It's still extremely tight atop the Sun Belt Conference as GSU's 69-55 win only allowed the 9-2 Panthers to remain tied with Georgia Southern and Arkansas State, also winners at home Monday night, for first place.

Jeremy Hollowell is Georgia State's best offensive player and the senior was great in this one, scoring 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting. And the key tonight for GSU was the work of Hollowell and the other four starters, who scored all but seven of the team's points.

The bench has been huge in many games this season, but struggled tonight (2-of-13 from the field), and it was starters Hollowell and the ever-improving Malik Benlevi (14 points, 4-of-7 from three-point range) and D'Marcus Simonds (10 points, six rebounds, four assists) who carried the team to its eighth consecutive win.

The GSU defense also had eight blocked shots, nine steals and forced 15 turnovers in holding just its second opponent to less than 60 points since the start of the new year.

I haven't watched the GSU women play nearly as much as the men over the last decade and a half, but despite that, I still feel comfortable in saying this was their most impressive victory during that time frame.

Just a thoroughly dominant performance by the Panthers, who won their third straight, 87-35.

Monroe led briefly, at 13-12 on a corner three from Gabriella Cortez with about two minutes to play in the opening quarter, but that was it for the visitors. It was a 19-15 game very early in the second before GSU went on a 45-3 run (I felt silly just typing those numbers), and led 64-18 with 52 seconds left in the third. During that long run, Monroe went nearly 13 minutes without a field goal.

GSU's defense was outstanding, forcing 25 turnovers (on 18 steals), holding Monroe to 26 percent shooting and out-rebounding its Sun Belt rival 45-24. Its offense wasn't too shabby either, shooting 51% and 10 different players handed out at least one assist.

Reserve Makeba Ponder led all scorers with 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three.
