It looked as though VCU was going to cruise to its first win of the season, building a lead as large as 21 points in the opening half. But the second half was a much different story, and GSU responded with an impressive performance over the final 20 minutes and instead picked up its first win of the season, 61-56.
VCU led 37-16 with just over two minutes to go until halftime, but scored just 24 points the rest of the day.
GSU's defense allowed just 19 second-half points (five in the fourth quarter) and a 6-of-20 shooting performance in the second half. Madison Newby, the 2015 Sun Belt freshman of the year who missed nearly all of the last season with an injury, knocked down two free throws with 45 seconds to go in the fourth that put GSU up for the first time at 55-53.
The Panthers were excellent at the line (22-of-26), while the Rams were not (8-of-18), and the hosts made 53% of their shots in the second after making only 4-of-29 during a dreadful opening half.
Newby and back court mate K.K. Williams each scored a game-high 15 points, sharing top scoring honors with VCU's Bria Gibson.
