There's nothing quite as horrifying & eventually gratifying about going on the road, losing a 16-point lead, committing 18 turnovers and 21 fouls, shooting 62 percent from the free-throw line and still escaping with a victory.
GSU did all those things on Monday, capturing its sixth straight, 83-80, and they did it mainly because it has D'Marcus Simonds and Jeremy Hollowell.
Each time I write about the Panthers on this site I find new ways to talk about how impressive is the freshman Simonds. He had just four points at halftime (though he did hand out four assists), but came alive in the second, taking over the offense and finishing with 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting. You don't hear Simonds' name at all when discussing the top freshmen in the country, but I think you're going to start to.
Hollowell hit a handful of baskets through the first 12 or so minutes of the game, but seemed to get exceedingly frustrated as the game went on.
But the senior was great down the stretch as he hit a bucket, then assisted on a Malik Benlevi 3-pointer at the three-minute mark to give the visitors a five-point cushion. South Alabama refused to go away, so Hollowell's contested, banked-in three with 45 seconds to go put GSU back up 76-73.
The Panthers were awful from the line through the first 39:44, but were a perfect 6-for-6 - Hollowell had two to finish with 20 points - over the final 16 seconds to slither out of Mobile with another win.
GSU, now 7-2 in the Sun Belt, moved into a three-way tie with Georgia Southern and Arkansas State for first place.
The teams played two extremely close games this season, both GSU victories. Back on January 7 in Atlanta, Devin Mitchell capped an 8-0, game-ending run with a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 78-77 win.

The Broncs came in leading the conference in three-point field goal defense, and Canisius made only 6-of-25 from behind the arc. Meanwhile, the Canisius defense is in the bottom 25 nationally in field goal percentage defense and Rider hit half of its shots (23-of-46).
* Play-by-play man Doug Sherman called Donyell Marshall an "NBA star", so we can't let him get away with that.

Illinois State hasn't reached the NCAA Tournament since the 1997-1998 team, under current Pittsburgh head coach Kevin Stallings, won the Missouri Valley and reached the Round of 32.
That long tournament drought could be coming to an end this year as the Redbirds remained perfect in league play (10-0) with Sunday's 69-59 victory.
It's the best start in Valley play in program history.
The starting front court of sophomore Phil Fayne and senior Deontae Hawkins was excellent, combining for 27 points and 18 rebounds and 68 percent (11-of-16) shooting from the field.
* Daouda Ndiaye did a little bit of everything, good and bad, for the visitors. The 7-0 sophomore center blocked a career-high six shots, but also had three turnovers and committed four fouls in just 14 minutes.
* Jaylon Brown (17 points, 7-of-16 FG) and David Howard (16, 6-of-7) showed up for Evansville, but the rest of the team did not (9-of-34). After winning 24 and 25 games, respectively the last two seasons and starting this season 9-4, things have turned in the wrong direction for the Purple Aces. Sunday's loss was the ninth in 10 games with the only win during that stretch coming on New Years day against Northern Iowa.

Simonds, who is avergaing 22.2 points and shooting 61 percent from the field over the last four games, took control of the offense from the very beginning, driving strong to the basket for a number of lay-ups and adding a smooth, short jumper or two. He was the best player on the floor, and that's with Troy's Wesley Person knocking down seven 3-pointers for a team-high 25 points.
The Panthers had 11 steals and despite nearly losing the entirety of a 14-point halftime lead, won for the fifth consecutive time.

Santa Clara knocked off BYU for the first time SINCE DECEMBER 2, 1972. Average margin of victory for the Cougars during their streak, which included a 30-point win less than a month ago, was 18 1/2 points.
Santa Clara not only avenged that defeat, but the 6-3 Broncos pulled even with BYU for third place in the West Coast Conference.
